Technische Universität München (TUM) is one of the leading German universities in Engineering and Science with long standing reputation for scientific excellence. TUM scientists have been repeatedly singled out for prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize. Today, nine holders of the Leibniz Prize awarded by the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) give lectures and pursue research at Technische Universität München. In many international and national rankings, TUM ranks first among all German universities.

The department of computer science at TUM has a long tradition, having started lectures in computer science as early as 1967. Today, it is one of the largest computer science departments in Germany, and is regularly evaluated being among the top computer science departments in Germany. The chair for Network Architectures and Services is one of 20 research units of the department of computer science at Technische Universität München. Research activities include innovative Internet technologies, with special focus on autonomic networking, network security, network monitoring, attack detection and defence, secure peer-to-peer and overlay networking, and negotiation of security policies over fixed and mobile network technologies.

Relevant projects are the EU FP7 project ResumeNet, with contributions towards the resilient Internet: service layer resilience, testbed and experiments; the EU Celtic project AutHoNe, with contributions on Autonomic Home Networking, in particular architecture, components for automated management and monitoring, testbed and experiment; the German national science foundation (DFG) project LUPUS, with contributions on load transformations and their usage for traffic prediction and understanding in networks with security requirements; and the SIPAC with EADS Innovation Works, with contributions to airplane onboard communication networks with hard performance guarantees.

The chair for network architectures and services at TUM operates a Future Internet laboratory. As part of this laboratory, TUM operates one Future Internet Instance, which is a result of the US-based GENI project GpENI. TUM operates another Future Internet Instance which supports decentralized, user-controlled networks and knowledge plane mechanisms.

TUM’ s full range of expertise from security over privacy, distributed autonomic management, including information storage and knowledge plane functionality for autonomic monitoring and management functionality, to prototypical migration of virtual resources in cloud environments will be brought into and extended in the project.

The Distributed Systems and Computer Networks group is one of 22 research groups of the Department of Computer Science of the TU Dortmund. The research focuses on: Network protocols; specification, verification, and efficient implementation, Distributed applications; computer-assisted quality-assured development, configuration and management of distributed applications, Integrated network and system management; policy- and model-based automation of technical management tasks, Security of networks and distributed systems; tool-assisted security-analysis, trust-adapted security policy enforcement, automated security management.

Recent developments enclose the modular formal temporal logic specification technique cTLA, a technique translating state-machine-models to efficient implementations of network protocols, control wrappers interacting with trust information services in order to secure component-structured applications, the approach of object-oriented security analysis, the automated management approach model-based management (MBM), and the Web Services stack implementation JMEDS.

The MBM approach is an extension of the so-called policy-based technical network, system and application management approach. MBM provides the refinement of abstract high-level policy definitions into configuration descriptions and executable management rules. Its application is supported by the tool MoBaSeC (model-based service configuration) and a low-footprint run-time management system. The tool performs the interactive graphical modeling of management policies and system structures. Moreover, it translates representations of abstract policies into low-level policies which are automatically enforced by the management system at runtime. The MBM approach has successfully been applied for the configuration of security services and protection mechanisms of networked systems as well as for the technical management of distributed service systems including general configuration, fault, performance, security and account management. The run-time management system is well suited to the self-management and self-adaptation of resource-constrained devices.

The JMEDS implementation supports the light-weight implementation of service systems by means of resource-restricted devices and embedded systems. The implementation is Java-based and suitable for the Java Micro Edition. It is compliant with the OASIS standard Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS). Moreover ongoing work accomplished an integration of JMEDS and OSGi leading to an approach which is as well compliant to the OASIS Web Services standard DPWS as to the OSGi standard Remote Services. MBM and JMEDS have been developed in close cooperation with the industrial partner MATERNA, Dortmund.

The planned major project contributions concern the design of the BaaS software architecture and development of software components adressing issues of:

The Institute of Computer Science (the ICS) is a university institute of Masaryk University responsible for the development of information and communication technologies at the university. The ICS conducts research and development activities in the field of information technologies with a long-term focus on research in digital libraries, healthware, large scale distributed systems and high quality multimedia processing. The ICS also substantially ensures the operation, development, coordination and services concerning the deployment of information and communication technologies at Masaryk University, especially the operation and development of academic computer networks and their connection to a high-level network infrastructure, and the computation and large data storage resources. The ICS is run by a director. The ICS includes a Supercomputer Centre which provides support to demanding computations and ensures the operation and further development of the high-performance computing infrastructure of Masaryk University and its integration in national and international structures.

Research and Development

The ICS participates in the EU Network of Excellence CoreGRID and in the joint research plan (with the Faculty of Informatics) oriented towards the issues of parallel and distributed computer systems. The ICS has also developed long-term close collaboration with the CESNET academic association, especially in the fields of optical networks, virtual environment for collaboration, programmable hardware and telemedicine. The institute also participates in the development and administration of the Czech academic grid environment (MetaCentrum) and the development of the national research network. In the field of digital libraries we investigate application of knowledge and information robot technologies for information searching and integration as well as for the creation of an adaptive multi-agent system to deliver an efficient, effective and self-managing Network Intrusion Detection System. The institute has developed long-term joint activities with the Czech National Library in Prague concerning the development of the infrastructure for collecting and archiving the Czech web (WebArchive). The ICS also extensively collaborates with hospitals throughout the Czech Republic on the development of the MeDiMed system – a metropolitan archive of digital medical visual information.
